/ HEARING SCREENS

NVSS School Hearing Program

Early detection matters. Annual class-wide hearing screens help identify and support students with varying types and degrees of hearing loss to minimize negative impact on language, social development, and academic performance.

Statistics Canada (2016) reported an estimated 8% of Canadian youth aged 6 to 19 exhibited temporary or permanent hearing loss.

Unfortunately, Indigenous children are at a significantly higher risk of hearing loss.
Studies have shown that Indigenous children are five times more likely to require remediation for hearing loss than non-Indigenous children.” (Howard, 2006)

LISTEN UP:
SIGNIFICANCE OF HEARING

Even mild and temporary hearing difficulties (e.g., unresolved viral infections) can put a child at risk for speech and language delay as well as negatively affect academic performance.

Hearing loss in children is most often due to ear infections (resulting in a build-up of fluid in the ear). Fluid can block sound waves and restrict hearing acuity, making it difficult to discriminate speech sounds. If left untreated, some infections can cause so much pressure that the eardrum ruptures, which can result in permanent hearing loss.

Unfortunately, First Nations children have a higher incidence of ear infections than students of other cultural backgrounds (Langan et al., 2007; Bowd, 2005). Therefore, hearing screens and early identification of hearing problems early on is crucial; the longer an infection is left untreated, the further risk it poses to hearing.

RECEIVE RESULTS

Hearing loss is an invisible disability, and often goes unrecognized and undiagnosed.

Late identification means supportive measures are not provided in a timely manner, and trust me, time matters.
